The popes living in the early centuries were venerated as martyrs and saints. Since the introduction of the canonization process in the 13th century, only one medieval pope (Celestin V) and one modern pope (Pius V) were officially proclaimed saint. This trend has been deeply modified in the last century, when almost all the reigning Roman Popes have been canonized.

In the modern times, with the exception of Pius V, there was a weak interest in the holiness of reigning popes. The cult was directed in favor of the popes of the ancient times, martyrs and saints. It took 140 years, before Pius V was canonized. During the 18th century this attitude changed, without any result.

The reputation of sanctity of the Roman Popes was deeply changing during twenty centuries. They were recognized as martyrs and confessors in the first centuries of the christianity. Only one pope in the middles ages (Celestin V) and another one in the modern times (Pius V) have been proclaimed a saint. In the last 150 years many Roman Popes became officially a saint or a blessed, from Pius IX to John Paul II.
